Our Southern families tended to name their children for surnames of their
neighbors and cousins. I can't believe anybody would name their child
Looney, which didn't have the same connotation in those days that it does
now. The Looney family from SW VA has emigrated all over the US, found in
WA state, were in the 1843 wagon train ~ the first wheels and the first
real cows across the Rockies. I suspect they came from NE VA and MD, where
the name may have been spelled differently, but this variation has stuck!
