Pat,
I have been subscribed to the Rhea list for a long time. But now I am going
to unsubscribe. My oldest known ancestor was Lindsey Rhea from Scott Co. Va
who moved to Pike Co. KY after 1825. His family were listed as 'Rhea', on
the 1850 Pike Co. Census. But for some reason, the spelling was changed to
RAY after that time. I have saw many discusons on this list that says that
these two spellings are from different lines, but I have documentented proof,
(wills, land deeds, marriage records, and census) that at least with my line
and all of their many ancestors, that the RHEA and RAY families are from the
same line.
I belive that Lindsey's father was John Watson? Rhea, Sr. and that he was a
brother or son of Joseph Rhea in Scott Co., VA. They probably were in
Franklin Co. at one time, also in NC and TN.
I thought of joining one of the Ray lists, but since I am looking for RHEAS
from 1700 on back, I don't think that would help me. I really hate to see
all of the problems that people have with the spelling of a name. I am
convinced that they are all from the same root. Whether it was from
illiteratecy, second party mistakes, or for intentional reasons, there was
indeed a spelling change. I have also seen family members spelled RAE, WRAY,
and RHAY. I hope that someday we can all get together on this family and
forget the little distractions, like how a name is spelled.
Please send me the 'unsubscribe' instructions, since I have long ago, lost
them.
Madge Ray
