Date: Tue, 7 Dec 1999 09:47:47 -0600

Dear friends:

These are inscriptions from tombstones on the family lot of Elizabeth (Rhea) Rhea
Etheredge Sargent in Bethel Cemetery, Cedar Township, Lucas County, Iowa.
Burials are from north to south. The cemetery began on land owned by Elizabeth
and her second husband, Thomas Etheredge, which they deeded to the public.
A substantial area was added later, to the south, when Bethel United Brethren
(now United Methodist) Church was built.

Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Polly) Rhea, married
first Richard Rhea, son of James and Rachel (Jolliff) Rhea,
22 May 1831 in Sangamon County, Ill. Following his death in
Sangamon County, she married Thomas Etheredge there
on 2 April 1842. They moved to Lucas County, Iowa,
where Thomas died. Elizabeth then married Edward Ebenezer
Sargent, an Englishman some 20 years her junior, on 12 or
13 September 1870 in Lucas County. Elizabeth's mother,
Mary (Rhea) Rhea Hickman came to Lucas county to live
with her daughter in old age. Mary had married James Hickman
during January of 1819 in Barren County, Ky, following her
first husband's death and that was the surname she bore at death.

Elizabeth, wife of E.E. Sargent (north face of "Sargent" family stone)

Mary Hickman (south face of "Sargent" family stone)
mother of Elizabeth Sargent
died Feb. 13, 1872
aged 84 years, 10 months, 15 days.

Dempsy Etheredge (son of Elizabeth Rhea and Thomas Etheredge)
died Aug. 6, 1896
aged 45 years, 1 month, 17 days

Thomas Etheredge (second husband of Elizabeth Rhea)
died Dec. 24, 1862
aged 58 years, 6 months, 4 days

Robert, son of T. and E. Etheredge (son of Elizabeth Rhea and Thomas Etheredge)
died April 9, 1863
aged 17 years, 2 months, 16 days

Following grave located on lot immediately west of Elizabeth's lot, above:

In memory of Lucinda, (daughter of Elizabeth Rhea and Thomas Etheredge)
wife of Amos Hixon
died June 11, 1882
aged 38 years, 2 months, 17 days

Call not back the dear departed
Anchored safe where
Storms are o're,
On the border land we left her,
Soon to meet and part no more.

Various descendants of Amos and Lucinda (Etheredge) Hixon
are buried elsewhere in the cemetery, as is Amos himself.

Regards,
