Pat,
It is difficult to ascertain whether the Archibald Reah in this list was
Archibald, the father of William, Archibald, and Robert, or the son,
Archibald. The sons purchased adjoining properties in that part of the
Borden Grant that is now in Rockbridge County, in 1750, 1753, and 1754,
respectively, so the younger Archibald was around when the petition was
presented to the court in 1753-1754. The petition on pages 441-442 of
Chalkley's CHRONICLES of THE SCOTCH IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA, Vol. I,
is under the general heading, "Original Petitions & Papers Filed in the
County Court." From the DRAPER MANUSCRIPTS, we know that the elder
Archibald was in Augusta County by 1746, and from the Rev. War pension
application of one Edward Mason, that the father was dead by 1767, and
possibly as early as 1757. So both father and son were living when the
petition was signed. The absence of the names of Archibald Jr.'s
brothers, William and Robert, would lead me to believe that Archibald Sr.
was the petitioner, but proof is lacking.
