Pat,

This Samuel was probably the son of Robert and Martha (Meek) Rhea, and
the grandson of William and Elizabeth (Clark) Rhea. Robert lived in
Pocahontas County, VA, now W. Virginia. If born about 1786, Samuel had
to be Martha's son, for she wasn't divorced until 1796. We know that
they had a son, Samuel, for in Robert's will, written Oct. 15, 1834, and
proved Dec., 1834, he gave "unto my son Samuel Rhea's children one
hundred dollars to be divided equally among them..." (Pocahontas Co.,
VA, Will book 1, p. 437). Grandchildren were usually named if the
parent had died, but there could be exceptions. The birth date and
location fit, as does the fact that Robert did have a son named Samuel.
There were other Samuel Rheas, one of whom may have drifted to
Pocahontas County.
