Pat,
Thanks for all your hard work. My great-grandfather was John L. Rhea in
Knoxville Tn born in 1868. There was also another John L Rhea, in Knoxville,
obviously kin to my John L because of many similar names. I wonder if this John
L. listed on the 1860 list was his father. This John L. died in 1914, and I have
a copy of his will. For a while I confused it with my GG-grandfather John L.
Rhea.
2nd question? Does this slave schedule list owners as well as slaves? Was
John L. and Hettie, Robert and Susan slaves, or owners? All these names fit my
known relatives but are on generation earlier than mine leading me to surmise
that they may have been grand parents, aunts, and in the case of Robert
Grandparents. We were always told that they had Indian blood and my John L.
married a Hattie who was at least half Indian. From her photo, I could guess more
than half.
Indians were often listed as slaves or colored as census takers only
received payment for whites and slaves or colored.
Where is/was Braxton County, Va. I know where the other counties are?
