Rhea Cousins,
Some time ago I ran across an item by a person who said that census takers
were only paid to record whites, slaves or Free People of Color. When an Indian
person was found, that person was recorded as slave or "Black" in order for the
census taker to get to get paid. We have never been able to connect our Rhea to
Indian origin though like your post I and many others have Indian ancestry legends
in our families.
Has anyone ever looked at slave records of Rhea/Rea owners to find if
perhaps an Indian Rhea was hiding there. On my Barnes line my GG-grandmother was a
Choctaw but we find her on a Woodall plantation listed as a "slave" which is
highly unlikely for a number of reasons including her later marriage to a person
who owned slave and official recorded which would not have been allowed in Al and
we also find similar names on Cherokee roles. SOOOO. is this a stone yet to be
turned over for a look see???
Just a thought. Dr. Bob!
