Thanks for the post.
Sometime ago I read an article on census takers who were instructed not to
record Indians. Census takers were paid by the head count, so rather than loose
the commission when they ran across Indians they simply recorded them as Colored.
Although freed slaves often took the surname of the family they had served,
and that could be the case here as my ancestor Archibald Moore had slaves before
the war, and it is logical that some may have taken his surname.
However some of those names list are distinctly Indian, and specifically
Cherokee names. Looney for example to cite one is on many Cherokee roles. Although
some Indians kept slaves, it was not common and so I suspect that many if not most
of these names represent misstated Indians. Several names including Moore and
Woodall are ancestors that I am searching and one is said by her family to be
Choctaw andfrom her photo certianly appears to be N/A, and a prominent Moore
married to a Woodall signed the New Echota treaty that moved the Cherokees west to
Okalahoma. For any researher on the febraskids list this might offer some clues to
elusive Indian roots?
