MORRIS CEMETERY, Caldwell Co., MO
Mirabile Township -- Section 24, Township 56, Range 29
Located: 3.8 miles west of Kingston on HH; at curve, turn onto gravel,
cemetery is on the north side of road.
The Morris Family Graveyard was originally on Kerr land; it was
primarily meant for the Kerrs but, also
includes families connected by marriage with the Kerrs and some of their
neighbors. James and Catherine
(Simpson) Kerr were the pioneers, arriving in Mirabile Township in 1858
from Ky. The earliest grave in the
cemetery is that of James Kerr, who died Jan. 19, 1860. One of their
daughters, Nancy, married Henderson Morris and they inherited the farm.
The second burial was Robert McBeath, who was killed as a southern
sympathizer in the Civil War,
April 1863. He was a son-in-law of the Kerrs, having married Mary Jane Kerr.
The oldest birth date in the graveyard is for Frances Allen, wife of
James Allen, (1791-1880) who was
the mother-in-law of Isabel Kerr. Isabel married Wallace Allen.
Jerry Sloan (1833-1885) has a reason for being there. His mother was a
Morris and his wife a daughter
of Socrates (Tes) Hinds, who is buried there. There is quite a list of
Hinds connections there. These people
were just good neighbors of the Morris-Kerr group. All having come to
Mo from Wayne Co., Ky.
Perhaps the most interesting graves there, are unmarked. The two graves
of two southern sympathizers
or rather southern soldiers who were taken prisoner by the Caldwell
County Militia and put to death in the field
opposite the graveyard. They were buried in this cemetery by order of
the Commander Capt. Johnson, without
coffins with their hats over their faces. Their names were: Stump
Breckinridge and Richard Lancaster. They
were members of Thrailkills Gang from Platte County.
One is impressed with the large number of very young children buried
there. Infant mortality was great.
