Posted by Nick Schultz <> on Mon, 12 Oct 1998
Surnames: Rae, Rea, Rhea, Wray, Wilson
Robert Rae. PVT. WILEY'S CO,
Henderson NC REGT., REV. WAR, November 08, 1852, Aged 91 years.
ROBERT RAE---
He is not listed under the Rae, but under:
Ray, Rea, Rhea, Wray
name spelling change by different menbers of the family.
I am sure it is the same person:
b. 7 June 1762 PA
d. 4 Nov 1852 IN
Pvt NC PNSR Wife: Nancy Patton
Robert is in our local records. He came from PA but served in NC. In our
Roster of Soldiers
and Patriots who served in the AM REV buried in Indiana, there is
listed the following.. "Name listed a Robbin, I believe this in error".
Robert Rea has two markers.
A regular stone badly worn and you can hardly see his name. But the
white military style marker while unreadable at first, was cleaned and it is
all there to the T. He is buried in Madison, Jefferson County Indiana.
Actually just outside the city limits (near local transfer station - dump)
in a clump of woods. The Cemetery is known
as the Underwood Cemetery. It may have been the Rea
Cemetery at one time but think the Underwood took it over and
perhaps cared for it and the name changed. The last burial there
was in 1888 and we have a newspaper article calling it the Underwood
Cemetery. It is now under our care Post 11 - Madison, Vietnam Veterans of the
War, Inc. under the permission of the Jefferson County Cemetery Board. There
are 2 other Rev War vets, both
named Wilson. They came from PA and served in PA units.
two vets - unmarked graves -no special military markers.
(They have civilian markers)

RHEA, John A.

Surnames: RHEA, COOPER, WILLIS
John A. Rhea. proprietor of Walnut Ridge livery stables, was born in Greene
County, Ark., September 30, 1854, and came to Lawrence County, when twelve
years of age. He received but a limited amount of schooling in his young days.
and was reared on his father's farm. On July 3, 1876, he was married to Miss
Lizzie Cooper, a daughter of Thomas and Ibbie (Willis) Cooper, early settlers
of this county. After his marriage he commenced farming for himself, but
shortly afterward gave up that occupation, and came to Lawrence County in the
year 1877, where he opened a hotel. Five years later he went into the business
of buying and selling horses, and then started a livery, which he has fostered
into a complete success. It is the only livery stable in the Eastern district
of Lawrence County, and commands quite a large trade. He also buys and sells
horses, and is the owner of a farm of 143 acres, of which 133 acres are under
cultivation. The bus line running between Walnut Ridge and Hoxie is controlled
by him, and he has the mail contract between those points. In politics Mr.
Rhea is a Democrat, and was the first town marshal of Walnut Ridge. He has two
children, Harry and Annie L.
