Subject: [RHEA-L] James RHEA (s. of Robert, of William) & Sarah J. GOODMAN
Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1998 04:40:24 -0800 (PST)

Although I have no direct RHEA ancestors of whom I am aware, I am
researching a James RHEA who married a woman I believe to have been my
gr.gr.grandmother, Mrs. Sarah J. "Sally" GOODMAN. I believe this James RHEA
was a son of Robert RHEA (1759-1834) and Martha Sarah MEEK, and a grandson
of William RHEA (1715-1802) and Elizabeth CLARK.

In a list of RHEA descendants published in the RHEA Rootsweb mailing list on
30 June 1998, this James RHEA is said to have been born on 25 April 1799 in
Greenbriar Co., VA, and died on an unknown date in Daviess Co., MO. "My"
James RHEA married Sarah GOODMAN on 4 April 1847 (Daviess Co., MO, Marriage
Book A, page 95). The 1850 US Census for Daviess Co., MO (pages 382-83),
lists James RHEA (52, VA), his wife, Sarah (38, VA), nine RHEA children:
Margaret (23, VA), Robert (21, VA), James F. (19, VA), Susan (16, VA), Davis
H. (13, VA), Elizabeth A. (8, MO), Catherine (6, MO), John A. (1, MO), and
Eliza H. (5/12, MO); and a GOODMAN child--Thomas P. GOODMAN (5, MO). The
GOODMAN child implies that Sarah was previously married, and I believe her
husband to have been Thomas GOODMAN, my gr.gr.grandfather who must have died
between 1845 and 1847, the year Sarah remarried. Judging from the ages of
the RHEA children, in light of James and Sarah's wedding date, John A. and
Elizabeth H. RHEA were children of James and Sarah, and the older children
were from James' prior marriage, mostly likely to Betty CALLISON. (I have
no death information on Betty.)

James RHEA must have died in Daviess Co., MO, before March 1853, as I found
a deed of property in Jackson Township of Daviess Co. from Sarah RHEA to a
Joshua DRUMMOND dated 9 March 1853 and stating that the estate of James
RHEA, deceased, was being administered by George W. POAGE (Daviess Co. Deed
Book D, page 263). I have found no grave for James RHEA. Unfortunately,
the Daviess Co. courthouse burned, destroying most of the old probate records.

In the 1860 US Census for Daviess Co. (page 329), Sarah RHEA is listed with
her children Thomas P. GOODMAN, Jno. A. RHEA, and Elizabeth H. RHEA. On 26
December 1872, John A. RHEA married Miss Sarah L. HARRIS (Daviess Co.,
Marriage Book D, page 141), and by 1876, they had two daughters, Ida L. and
Cora A. RHEA (1876 Missouri State Census for Daviess Co.). On 27 November
1873, Eliza H. RHEA married Joseph WYNN (Daviess Co., Marriage Book D, page
175), and in the 1876 Missouri State Census for Daviess Co., Sarah RHEA was
living with Joseph and Eliza H. WYNN. In the 1880 US Census for Daviess
Co., the last in which I found Sarah RHEA, she again was listed with Joseph
and Eliza WYNN and their son Jarman.

My question for the RHEA researchers is when and where did Sarah J.
(GOODMAN) RHEA die, and where was she buried?
