These property tax records have been extracted from the original records in
the
Clerk of Circuit Court Office in Lexington, VA. They have been extracted in
the
order found and are arranged by first letter of last name. they are not
strictly alphabetical. Spelling was written as found, leaving the reader to
discern for themselves.
In 1783, the tax assessor noted the number of free white males in a
household over age 21 years, their names and the names of slaves in a
household; number of slaves in the household over age 16, number of slaves
under age 16; number of horses; number of cattle. The assessors noted holders
of tavern licenses, covering horses (stud) and the rates charged. Often older
men were exempt from the tithable tax, as were women.
This listing covers the Southwest District of the County, the Northeast
District is missing for the year 1783.
Categories: free white males, slaves above 16, slaves age 12-16, horses and
cows.
