Subject: [RHEA-L] William, George, & Thomas RAY
Date: Sun, 6 Sep 1998 10:12:26 EDT
I am working on the ancestors of William Ray (1782-1866) OF Washington Co., PA
and Ohio Co., VA/WV. William married 1807 in Philadelphia, PA, Margaret
Graham of Chester Co, then they moved to Washington CO., PA.
What I have seen indicates that the brothers came to American when young, from
Ireland where they had been born. They may have resided near Ballynahinch,
County Down.
In 1809, William purchased about 92 acres on Wheeling Creek, then sold it in
1814 after he had purchased over 150 acres in Ohio Co.
Williams's brother George (ca 1784-1860) lived in Lancaster Co., PA prior to
settling in Ohio Co. about 1819/20.
William's brother Thomas (1790-1874) married Martha Gibson, daughter of George
and Jane (Curry) Gibson.
A reference indicates that William, George, and Thomas may be descendents of
John Ray, 'the naturalist'. This John Ray is the son of Roger & Elizabeth Ray
of Black Notley, near Braintree, England. He married 1673, Margaret
Oakley/Oakeley and had four daughters. So could the brothers be descendents
of John's brother?
Anyone researching this family?
Sara
