Donna, I wish I knew how Luke fits into the Ray family. It's good to have
someone finally searching in my "neck of the woods." Here's the children
of John Ray, Sr. and Sarah Wilson, married in Anne Arundel County in
1731, both died in Pr. George's County.
John, Jr., b. June 24, 1732, m. Martha Wood
Elizabeth, b. Jan. 24, 1734, m. Joshua Harbin
Sarah, b. Oct. 7, 1735, m. William Collier
Mary, b. Nov. 20, 1737, m.
Benjamin, b. Nov. 7, 1739, m. Amelia Mitchell on 26 Dec. 1782
William, b. Sept. 19, 1741
Phillis, b. Aug. 8, 1743
James, b. June 12, 1745
Lucinda, b. June 28, 1747
Anne, b. Nov. 4, 1749
Samuel, b. Aug. 5, 1753
Josiah (may be the Josiah Ray living in Claiborne Co., TN in 1813 and I
believe is on the tax record of that date).
John, Sr.'s father was William and is likely the one appearing on
petitions, etc. in Pr. George's County along with Luke. I have abstracts
of wills too but no mention of a Luke. However all my Rays were known by
their middle name although signed their full name on legal documents.
There were a couple of Swearingen and Ray marriages in Maryland. The Mary
listed above may have married one of the Swearingen/Van Sweringen men.
Obviously there were more Rays in early MD than just this family. I've
been working on sorting them out for a few years now but have not
entirely put them all together. Possibly I never will as there were also
Rays in DE, NJ, and PA some of which all moved down into VA as mine did.
A tough family to sort out! Have you made any progress with them?

P.S. I hope this Ray stuff doesn't offend anyone. In TN mine spelled the
family name both ways and am still not sure which is correct.
