I'm supposed to be resting after surgery, but wanted to add something. Tax
records are very important for the researchers and can give you a lot of
clues. Certainly, if a young man pops up on the list for the first time,
having reached age 21, it is possible that the man of the same surname
above or below his name is a potential parent - especially if their "tick
count" of white males in the household of one decreases that year. But I
don't know if one could take as concrete evidence that the two men are
father and son.
Each county clerk recorded these tax records differently. In 1800 in Warren
Co for instance, the clerk decided to put them all in alphabetical order,
based on the first initial of their FIRST name - so all the Roberts are
together, etc. etc. Some clerks alphabetized by last name - presumably
copying the names from the tax collector's records - sometimes they missed
alphabetized some and you'll find them in the wrong place. Some clerks
recorded them just as shown which helps. So - if you find two men with the
same surname, in the same tax district or with land along the same waterway
... it's a wonderful clue that just maybe they were kin. But, it would take
other documentation along with this too. Sandi
