For all those to whom E-mailed me about the Clan Campbell, USA 1940 and 1947
books, I will respond here.
The Clan Campbell, USA predated the Clan Campbell, NA. When my
grandfather wrote his family tree document (1948), the Clan Campbell, USA
was headed by The Duke of Argyll, Naill Campbell, Inveraray Castle, Argyll,
Scotland, Chief of Clan Camp0bell, Chairman. Address: Campbell Memorial,
Belfry Corner, Inverary, Scotland.
The American Branch: Mrs. Mary Latham Norton, Chairman for Averica,
2970 Juniper St.. San Diego, Calif. ( A 16 State Organization.) Mrs. also
held the position held as Clan Genealogist.
Dairmid Campbell sent me an E-mail about the 1947 book. Here is the text
of the E-mail.
The book is "The Campbells are Coming' by Glenn H. Campbell, Published
by Dodd Mead and Co., NYC, in 1947. It is long out of print and very rare.
There is no ISBN nunber - I am not sure when they were invented.
The book was written by an enthusiastic amateur, with the style starting
out very folksy untill he realized he had bitten off more than he could chew
and it gets very solid to try to get through all the material. It is of
course mainly a history of the Chiefs and largely taken from the Scots
Peerage as a secondary source and other books, rather than from original or
primary sources.
As you may be aware, the Clan Campbell Education Association hes
commissioned the rexearch and writing of a three volume history of Clan
Campbell in Scotland and the first volume should be ready for the work of
publication in June 1999. Many of us are donating funds to this carse as
the 3 volumes will cost about $100,00 to produce. We have raised $42,000 so
far so the first volume is assured. Those who donate can take a tax
deduction but will still have to pay for the book when it comes out - Likely
about $30 to $40 each volume.
All best, Diarmid Campbell
