For those of us who have connected Rhea lines to Matthew 'the Rebel'
Campbell/Rhea, the most intriguing connection of all is now that of Matthew to
his ancestors. From what I have seen so far, it is likely that Matthew was
the son of Walter and Jean Campbell. The family lore and the facts we know
so far are in good agreement. This connection is unproven however. In
search of new information on this connection, I spent the pounds to gain entry
to the website of Scots Origins. This website is new and claims to have Old
Parish records indexed from 1553-1856, the Statutory Index from 1855-1897 and
the 1891 Census on line.
So that we all do not waste the money doing the same search I thought you may
want to know the following.
I tried searches for Walter Campbell, Jean Campbell, Matthew Campbell, Donald
Campbell, Daniel Campbell (perhaps Matthew's brothers), and Matthew Campbell
(of Skipness) b. abt 1600 d. 1647. None of these searches yielded the
individuals I was looking for. There was only one match for Matthew, a son of
Thomas born 1661 and one match for a Walter, son of John b. 1625. Although
there were matches for Jeans and Donalds, none were the individuals I was
interested in, children of Walter and Jean Campbell of Skipness.
