Martha and probably some others have quite a bit on this branch of the
Rhea family. Hopefully some of the info below will help complete the
picture of this line. This info did not come from the book called History
of Old Tennent but from a file in the back room of the Gloucester County
History Society's library on Hunter Street in Woodbury, NJ. This little
library is terrific and I've found some terrific stuff there over the
years.By the way, I called a library today and got the proper name of
this book which is The History of Old Tennent Church by Frank Rose Brook
Symmes, 2nd edition published 1904 by G. W. Burroughs, Cranbury, NJ.
John Rhea, a son of David Rhea of Monmouth County, NJ was a merchant in
Philadelphia. John married Mary Smith, a daughter of Samuel Smith and
Mary Harrison. John Rhea's name appears on a list dated March 18, 1773
of elders present at a meeting. His name does not appear at a meeting
held May 17, 1773 but there was no church record of his death. A note
states that there was trouble among the members about singing a certain
revision of David's Psalms. Another note in this file states that John
died April 16, 1773 in Philadelphia intestate. Administration of his
estate is recorded in book H, page 111. Cause of death is not stated.
John and Mary's children are given as:
ANNA, b. May 23, 1754, bap. 6-27-54 by Rev. W. Tennant.
MARY, b. Aug. 26, 1756, bap. 9-26-56 by Rev. G. Tennant.
ELIZABETH and SUSANNAH (twins), b. Aug. 16, 1759, bap. Sept. 16, 1759 by
Rev. G. Tennant.
JOHN, b. June 30, 1762, bap. Sept. 1762 by Rev. Rich Treat.
DENNYS (named for the Denise family?) de BERDT, b. June 30, 1762, bap.
Aug. 11, 1771 by Dr. Sproutt.
EBENEZER, b. Nov. 15, 1773, bap. Jan. 1, 1774. Father is listed as
deceased, mother Mary is a widow.
John RHEA (the father) is stated as being a ruling elder of 2nd
Presbyterian Church on November 14, 1765. He is named as a trustee in the
charter of 2nd Presbyterian Church and recorded November 18, 1772.
Other notes in this file state that Elizabeth RHEA married William BARTON
on June 14, 1781, and Susannah married William TILTON on November 9,
1780.
On a separate paper written in a different hand is given the following
info:
David RHEA's son John RHEA was a merchant in Phila., married Mary SMith,
daughter of Samuel Smith and Mary Harrison. John Rhea and Mary Smith had:
ELIZABETH married William BARTON of Lancaster, PA
SARAH married (1) Mr. HIGGINSON of Boston (2) Thomas ARTLEY (English
gentleman living in Philadelphia)
JOHN
JANE married (1)William TURNBULL of Baltimore (2)Robert SMITH (3)Col.
TILTON
(At least the marriages listed below agree with the first source above.
Or perhaps Mary is Mary Jane)
These names are listed without an explanation of what they mean, perhaps
they are children and grandchildren appearing in a will.
--- RHEA
Mary TURNBULL
Elizabeth BARTON
Nancy TILTON
--- SMITH
Sarah ARTLEY
John RHEA
Ebineezer RHEA
These are RHEA marriages I found in a book listing NJ Marriage. The place
names appeared after the marriages just this way in the book.

1760 Nov. 1 RHEA, Aaron and Mary ROBINSON (Freehold)
1778 Jan. 13 RHEA, Mary and William MONTGOMERY (Monmouth Co.)
Here's a little tidbit I found in a genealogy on the Montgomery and Wood
families of Monmouth County. It may have been from Colonial Families of
Philadelphia, but don't ask me to cite the book.
William MONTGOMERY was born in Philadelphia 1751, reared in Monmouth
County, NJ, a Major in the NJ line in Revolutionary War, died 1815
Monmouth County, married Mary, a nieceof General Robert RHEA. Children
were WILLIAM, ROBERT, JONATHAN moved to New Orleans, and DAVID to
Kentucky and later Louisiana.
