Also from the book History of Old Tennent, in a section describing the
GORDON family, pg. 424/425:
The GORDONs of Pitlurg, Scotland, senior representatives of "Jock" GORDON
one of the two earliest known progenitors of the family, have always
regarded themselves as the chiefs of the GORDON family.
John HAMPTON, of Freehold, Planter, b. --- d. 1702 (formerly of
Elphingstone East Lothian, Scotland, "Gardiner") m. Jean --- had 10
children:
JOHN md. 1686/87 Martha BROWN, dau. of Abraham. DAVID. JOSEPH.
ANDREW. JONATHAN. NOAH. ELIZABETH. LYDIA md. Charles GORDON.
JANNETT md. 1689 Robert RHEA. JANE md. 1706/07 Nathaniel Fitzrandolph
of Woodbridge.
The HAMPTONs were related to the GORDON family back in Scotland.
In the index of this book is given a list of families for which the
author has provided genealogical notes. I'm listing them here to give you
an idea of the early and prominent families in this area. I have copies
of only a few pages of this book.

In the next (and final) installment, I'll list my personal notes
regarding John RHEA, son of David RHEA of Monmouth Co., NJ. He's the John
that moved to Philadelphia, became a merchant, and an elder in the 2nd
Presbyterian Church. Also I think a mention is due of a possible
connection of this GORDON family with that of Col. Jesse RAY of Ashe
County, NC whose mother was Elizabeth GORDON and father William RAY/RHEA,
etc. from Amherst County, VA. If someone has info on the origin of the
Amherst Co., VA RAYs/RHEAs, I'd sure like to hear about it. Happy
holiday!
