Dear Rhea List,
Received this informative query today and felt it had much data to be
posted to the list as I do not believe this is of the Rev. Joseph Rhea
line, but the Archibald Rhea/William Rhea, of Virginia. Good research
data here for some one, I'm sure!
Can anyone on the list help connect these Rhea descendants?
Thank you,
Anne Rhea Bruce

Ms Bruce,
My sincerest apologies for bothering you, however I am pursuing research
my grandfather E. W. Rhea undertook, prior to his passing, regarding his
origins. By chance I stumbled upon your web-site and decided to contact
you.
Much of my grandfather's information concerning Matthew Rhea II fits
neatly with the geneology I found on your web-site... However, his use
of names is contradictory. For example he calls Matthew's (W.
Campbell's...) sons by different names: 1) Matthew II is "John." 2)
Archibold (presumably my ancestor) is "James." 3) William is correctly
identified. Frankly, this doesn't surprise me as his sources are lost in
the mists of time.
My grandfather (<underline>Elmer William Rhea</underline>) was from
Grundy County/Coffee County, Tennessee. He was born in 1900, the son of
<underline>James Rhea (1875-1944) and Dora Hobbs (1883-1949)</underline>.
James was the son of another <underline>James (1833-1912) who married
Mary Winton (1839-1913)</underline>. I believe this to be factual as we
found his will at the courthouse in Morrisson, Tennessee.
We also found the family cemetary ("Wesley Cemetary") with Rhea
tombstones (most were in agreement with his facts) dating back to roughly
the 1830s.
Now, my question... My grandfather traced our family back to one James,
whom you call Archibold. Do you have any information regarding
Archibold? Or, do you have any information regarding the Rheas of Coffee
County/Grundy County, Tennessee? (Interestingly while seeking the Rhea
homestead, my wife and I were directed by the county clerk's office to a
hollow near Viola called, "North Cut Cove." Very isolated, it still had a
few Rheas living in the vicinity).
If it is of any help, our lineage continued after James Rhea and Mary
Winton as follows (again, my grandfather may or may not be inaccurate
regarding names and dates):
James was the son of <underline>William Rhea (1813-?) who married
Elizabeth Froley</underline>. He too lived in Grundy County, Tennessee.
William was the son of <underline>Robert Rhea (?-?...baptized 1793) who
married Martha Cook (from Virginia)</underline>. They died and were
buried in Grundy County.
James was the son <underline>Robert (1724-1776) who married Mary
Foreman</underline>.
This is where I think some problems arise... My grandfather claims that
they were from Freehold, NJ and moved to Allentown,Pa where they
eventually died.
Robert was the son of <underline>David (1698-1761) who married Anne
Foreman</underline>.
They lived in Freehold, NJ.
David was the son of <underline>Robert Rhea (1685(?)-? Whom you call
Archibold?) and Mary Hampton (?-1761)</underline>. They both emmigrated
from Scotland/Ireland, met and married in Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ.
My grandfather's notes say that Robert/Archibold was the son of William,
whom you call Matthew I or Walter Campbell...
Well, I have about 20 pages of notes generated by my grandfather's
research, though I have no sources apart from the wills/deeds that we
found in Morrisson, Tennessee and the headstones at Wesley Cemetary in
Viola, Tenn. He devotes a page or two to William the third son of Matthew
(W. Cambell), although--again--I'm not sure where the data came from. My
inclination is toward skepticism, but his family "plot" follows yours for
Matthew II (whom he calls John) to the letter...
I am truly sorry to have wasted so much of your time to this point. I
will close now with hope of hearing from you.
Any help or clarification would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Patrick (Rhea) Fitzgibbon
PS I enjoyed your web-site, it was very captivating and well organized.
