Subject: [RHEA-L] Origin of Monroe County, TN

About two weeks ago, the origin of Monroe Co., TN was sent out by
RHEA-L. I would like to call your attention to the following:

ORIGIN OF MONROE CO., TN: Formed out of lands previously owned by the
Cherokee Indians (the Hiwassee Purchase, U.S. Treaty of 1819, "Calhoun
Treaty"). After survey and division into sections, these lands were
referred to as the "Hiwassee District." Besides Monroe, McMinn and part
of Hamilton, and a small part of Blount Counties were also created from
lands in the Hiwassee District. Early Monroe County land records may
actually be found in McMinn Co., since a Land Register's office was
established in Athens in 1825 to accommodate land sales in the Hiwassee
District. References:
1. Sarah G. Cox Sands: HISTORY OF MONROE COUNTY, TENNESSEE, Vol.
I/
Part I, "Pre-settlement Period Formation of Monroe County Government,"
Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1982. (Mrs. Sands published three
volumes on the history of Monroe County).

2. Monroe County Heritage Book Committee, Joy Locke, Chairperson:
MONROE COUNTY, TENNESSEE HERITAGE 1819-1997, Don Mills, Inc., 1997.

Unfortunately, several genealogy reference books have published
incorrect information about the formation of Monroe County, TN, and each
edition perpetuates the error.
