John Rhea was the oldest of the children of the Reverend Joseph Rhea,
1715-1777, He was not married and didnot have any children, that we know of.
Joseph Rhea was son of Matthew Rhea, son of Matthew Rhea, the Rebel. John
Rhea wrote memoirs telling of what he know of the early Rhea history. He was
born in Ireland. He returned to Ireland and brought his cousin and also his
kinswomen, the Breden sisters who became wives for his brothers and a cousin.
His brothers and sisters settled in Tennessee(although not all Tennessee Rheas
descend from the Rev'd Joseph. The following is a short biography from the
tombstone of John Rhea in Blountville, Tennessee Cemetery. "Sacred to the
Memory of John Rhea, who departed this life May 27, 1832, aged 79 years. He
was licensed to practice law in 1789. In the same year was a member of the
Convention of N. C. that ratified the Constitution of the United States. Was
a member of the N.C. Legislature the same year. Was a Member of the General
Assembly of Tennessee. Was a member of Congress from 1803 to 1815, 14 years-6
years of that time was chairman of the Committee of Post Offices and Post
Roads. Was again a member of Congress from 1817 to 1828. All of which time
he was chairman of the Committee of Pensions and Claims. Was one of the
commissioners in 1816 that formed a treaty with the Choctaws. The dust shall
return to the earth as it was and the Spirit shall return to the God who gave
it."
