This weekend, on our way home from the Outer Banks, I persuaded my husband to stop in Salisbury, NC to check out the McCubbins file on my Barkley family. As we had a long drive, I ask for "just one hour". Boy, I could have used several days!
I rushed and found the Barkley files and started copying. One letter I found may be of interest. It was from Mrs. Robert Peterson of Memphis, TN, dated 10 Jul 1977. The following is a portion of the letter:
William Barclay bought land in Green Co, TN in 1812, and is shown on the tax list that year with one white poll and 140 acres. He is in the list of those whose mail had not been claimed in the Knoxville, TN Post Office 1 Jan 1808. He married about 1801 MARY RHEA, born 1779, Virginia, the daughter of ARCHIBALD RHEA who settled in the south bend of French Broad River near Knoxville in 1787. Mary's brother, ARCHIBALD RHEA, JR. married Catherine Sherrill Sevier, daughter of Gen. John Sevier, first Governor of Tennessee.
William and MARY (RHEA) Barclay moved to Jackson Co, AL by the time of it's formation in 1819, and he served for 13 years in the Alabama Senate and House of Representatives (between 1821 and 1835). He moved with his family to Talladega about 1835.
I have been able to prove only two of the children of William and Mary (RHEA) Barclay:
1. Archibald Rhea Barclay, born 16 Apr 1802, TN, died 19 Aug 1869, Talladega, AL. Married Martha Staples and had no children. Archibald Rhea Barclay was a lawyer. owner of a large plantation; represented Talladega County in the Constitutional Convention of 1861 (regarding secession); and was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives 1842.
2. Hugh Gaylord Barclay, born 1 Feb 1804, TN; died 18 Sep 1862. Buried in Oak Hill Cem, Talladega, He was a merchant and was married three times. His first wife was Mahala ____, b. 9 Mar 1809, d. 1 Jun 1833, the first white citizen to die in Talladega. His second wife was Emaline Turnipseed. His third wife, married 1841 in Talladega, was Margaret A. Chilton, widow of Atty. George P. Brown and daughter of Rev. Thomas John Chilton, a Bapt. minister, lawyer who served two terms in the U.S. Senate from KY, and who wrote the autobiography of David Crockett.
------------------------------------------
Now I need to get back there and check the McCubbins file and family files for Rhea. Little did I know that there might be a Barkley/ Rhea connection, although Pat's Lawrence line could be connected to the Barkleys through Lawrence, McConnell and Knox!
