Fellow Rhea Researchers:
Thought this might be helpful to some of you on the list. We know that William
Rhea, Rockbridge and Augusta co., was issued a hemp certificate . If any of
you see this mentioned you'll know what it means.
A hemp certificate was the same thing as a tobacco certificate. It was
a document showing the holder had turned in so many pounds of the named
commodity to the warehouse for sale. These certificates were used as
cash since there was little hard currency in circulation. In many
respects, tobacco warehouses were the banks of the colonial times.
