Subject: One RAY/RHEA family in Bedford Co., VA and Claiborne Co., TN
Date: Wed, 10 Dec 1997 18:32:22 -0500
Hi fellow researchers,
Any researchers recognize this family? On the 1830 Claiborne Co., TN
census appears Nancy Rhea listed between two John Rheas. The older John
Rhea, age 60-70, was Nancy's father-in-law. Nancy's husband was Joseph
Rhea, the oldest son of the older John. Joseph was a Methodist circuit
rider who died at a young age leaving Nancy with several children. The
younger John was Joseph's younger brother.
Many researchers have identified these Rheas with the Sullivan County, TN
Rheas. I've studied them for several years and believe that if they are
related at all it is distantly. My Rhea/Ray family was listed on records
before 1830 as RAY and appear only later as RHEA.
Back up the "Valley" in Bedford Co., VA appears the will of Joseph RAY,
filed 26 May 1767, naming sons Andrew and John, and daughters Mary and
Precilla (Priscilla). Another source says his wife was Martha. I believe
that the son John named in the will is the older John on the 1830
Claiborne Co. listing. Why? Not only because the dates fit but older John
named his kids Andrew, John,Mary and Priscilla (there were more) and his
first-born son was my Joseph. The name Martha was also used. Maybe
coincidence, at least until documented.
Please, can anyone add to or correct what I have? I've posted this to
more than one list so apologize if you receive it more than once.
