Here is something else on this family.

Mrs. Mercedes Pertuit of Houma, La., a descendant of the John Ray, Sr., who
died in Missouri in 1820, found out from one of her pen pals that "the Rays
came early and in large families. All the pioneers left off the "W" in their
names. This information was taken from page 402 of the "History of
Cumberland County-Pioneer Genealogies by J. W. Wells, 1947".

This part written by S. B. Ray
Our father, Joseph Ray, was raised in S. C. our Mother Mary Ray was raised in
Pa.
They married in Ky. in 1793 and raised a family of 8 sons and three
daughters, each one of whom lived to raise a large family of thier own. In
the course of time the Rays became numerous and they say it ws necessary to
divide and search for more territory for their stock to graze upon. as some
of their Patriarchs did.
For some unknown reason some of them changed the spelling of the name to
Rhea, rha and Rey, but Ray is the real spelling. Our mothers brother was
killed by Indians. He was George Phouts. Killed in Tenn.
