Elijah was born 1798/9 TN. He married, 1931, Washington Co.,
AL, Nancy Ann "Ann" MARTIN, dau. of Andy P. & Mary Sellers
MARTIN of Clarke Co., MS. Elijah appears on the 1840 census
of Clarke Co., MS; on the 1850 Census of Choctaw Co., AL,
(in which his surname is spelled RHAE) along with the household
of a D. RHAE who may have been his brother or other relation
(they are the only two RAY/WRAY/RHEA/RHAE families on that
census), and on the 1860 census of Choctaw Co., AL, also. Elijah
and Ann Martin RHEA/RAY/RHAE/WRAY had the following children:
(1) Robert Andrew RAY/RHEA/RHAE b. 1832; m. Susan WRIGHT,
dau. of Jesse Austin WRIGHT & Elizabeth GUINN of Madison,
Sumter, and Choctaw Cos., AL;)
(2) Martha Ann (apparently known as Ann; don't know if she married;
she was living with her parents on the 1860 Choctaw Census)
(3) Mary Jane (apparently known as Jane; m. Silas Anderson WRIGHT,
son of James D. & Nancy CLARDY WRIGHT of Laurens Co., SC,
and Madison, Sumter and Choctaw Cos., AL [Silas was the brother
of Jesse Austin WRIGHT, above])
(4) Thomas (no info except that he was living in 1860 in the houselhold
of his father and mother, and was recorded as a planter.)

Both Elijah and Robert Andrew RHAE/RAY (etc.) joined Co. C, 22nd
ALA Infantry Regiment, CSA. Elijah was discharged in Nov., 1862,
with kidney disease and "broken down constitution." In his discharge
papers, Capt. Abb Gaines of Co. C stated that Elijah was born in
Coosa Co., AL (though all other records say TN.) I suspect that Elijah,
though born in TN, was raised mostly in Coosa Co., AL.

Robert Andrew RHAE/RHEA/RAY/WRAY served the entire duration
of the war in the service of the 22nd ALA. He was at the battles of
Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Chicamauga, Lookout
Mt., and others. His unit was cited for outstanding bravery at Shiloh
(First Battle Honor), Murfreesboro (Second Battle Honor) and
Chicamauga (Third Battle Honor; the 22nd ALA of Deas' Brigade
routed Sheridan's Union Brigade here.) Robert was wounded at Resaca,
GA, during the Atlanta campaign, and spent the rest of the war in prison
camp, reportedly hospitalized.

Robert apparently had a mental breakdown of some sort following the
war. I am in possession of his original CSA Pension Application, filed
1 July 1901. Robert died in an institution in 1910 in Carmichael, Clarke Co., MS.

I have found several other descendant lines from my great-great-
grandfather, Robert, and his sister, Jane WRIGHT, but I have not found
any descendants of Ann or Thomas.

I would very much like to hear from any and all who are descended
from Elijah and Ann Martin RHAE/RAY.

Pam
