Diane,
Is it a possibility that your Ray went to this innkeeper, as an apprentice.
Yu might check apprentice records for that time period, and co. Sometimes
will list parents. How old was he when he was listed with the innkeeper?
In that area where he was listed as living with an innkeeper, I would look at
wills, deeds, etc, to see if his father may have died and that maybe this
innkeeper became his guardian. Also guardian bonds.
How old was his wife when they married? If she was under age someone had to
give permission. Check records in Scotio Co.. check his will and see what
you can learn. Sometimes it will tell of land he owned somewhre else.
My g.g.grandfathers will was full of info. Land he had owned in another
state, that he had given all of his children 160 acres each before he died.
That he had left money an d land to a brother in law. Wonderful info.
What I do is sit down and make out a plan. Write down what you want to know
basically. Then what records to look at , what time period. and then
methodically do it. and be sure you write down what you find out, on that
plan sheet, time period you searched, and date it and sign it.
Put in a ring notebook. You'll be surprised how fast that notebook will fill
up with more plans, and maybe even some marriage cert. death rec. etc. I
also buy a box of sheet protectors. Do not buy the ones that are made of an
oil product, it will eventually ruin your forms.
