TIP #70 - KENTUCKY TOWNS - PART 2

Altro: Breathitt Co, 11 miles S of Jackson, was home to railroad crews.
First PO established 5 Sept 1892 at Bush Branch, named for the Bush
family. In 1916, this was moved 1 1/2 miles to the Altro station.

Alumbaugh: Estill Co. Settlement on Station Camp creek, 6 miles SSE of
Irvine. Extince post office which had been established May 14, 1891, named
for first postmaster, John P Alumbaugh. Closed 1958.

Alum City: Lewis Co. See Vanceburg.

Alvaton: Warren Co. Junction of US 231 and KY 872, 5 miles SE of Bowling
Green. PO established 18 June 1883, Samuel J Witherspoon, post master.
Named for Alva Dickerson Larmon, wife of John Larmon of a nearby Larmon's
Mill.

Alvin PO: Floyd Co. See Emma.

Amanda Furnace: Greenup Co. Existed near an iron furnace on the banks of
the Ohio River, below mouth of White Oak Creek, a little over a mile NW of
the Boyd Co line. Furnace built here 1829 by James E McDowell and the
Poage brothers - named for Amanda Jane, infant daughter of the co-owner of
the furnace, William Lindsay Poague. Closed in 1861. PO was in operation
here between 1828 and 1862.

Amanda PO: Boyd Co. See Amanda Furnace.

Amanda PO: Cumberland Co. See Amandaville.

Amandaville: Cumberland Co. Across Crocus Creek from mouth of Puncheon
Camp Creek, 7 miles NNE of Burkesville. Nathan Elliott established the po
17 Dec 1856, named it for his wife or daughter. Discontinued 1872,
re-opened in the same area in 1884 and named Amanda. Two months later
re-named to Amandaville. Closed 1957.

Amba: Floyd Co. Known also as Ambytown, 1 mile up KY 979 in Mud Creek
Calley, one mile SW of Harold and 10 1/2 miles SE of Prestonburg. Named
for Amba Walters, daughter of a physician in Harold who established site 7
June 1902. Andrew J Roberts was first postmaster, po closed in 1959.

Ambrose PO: Jessamine Co. See Sulphur Well.

Ambytown: Floyd Co. See Amba.

Anchorage: Jefferson Co. 12 1/4 miles E of the Louisville courthouse.
Founded by Edward Dorsey Hobbs, president of the now L&N Railroad. First
called Hobbs Station. PO established 5 Jan 1865 with William Henry Cox the
first postmaster. Town and post office were renamed Anchorage in 1872 -
supposedly for the home of his friend, James W. Goslee, a riverboat
captain had retired to in 1857.

Anco: Knott Co. Post office closed recently, was at the head of Yellow
Creek, 2 miles from where the Carr Fork Creek confluenced, 6 miles SSW of
Hindman. PO was established 6 Oct 1822, named for the first postmaster,
Anderson Combs.

Anglin PO: Carter Co. See Hitchins.

Anneta: Grayson Co. On KY 259, 7 miles ESE of Leitchfield. The VanMeters
originally settled this area in the early 19th century, but the post
office was not established until 28 Nov 1882. Peter Decker was the first
postmaster and he named it for his daughter.

Annsville: Jackson Co. This little village extends for a mile along KY
30, 4 miles W of its junction with US421 at Tyner, 7 miles S of McKee. The
post office was originally called Chinquapin Rough by Franklin P Riley 17
July 1878, then renamed to its current name in 1886 for Nancy Ann, wife of
a local storekeeper. Originally named for the trees which grew there -
dwarf chestnut trees.

Ansel: Pulaski Co. Post office no longer exists; was located on the west
bank of Fishing Creek and opposite the mouth of the Buncombe Branch, 7
miles NW of Somerset. PO was established 18 June 1886 and named for the
first postmaster, Ansel L. Wood.

Anthoston: Henderson Co. 3 1/2 miles S of Henderson, this town was first
known as Bloomington. This was changed since there was already a town by
that name. Dr H H Farmer, suggested a translation into the Greek language
"authos." PO was established with current name 26 June 1884, William P.
Roll was the first post master. PO closed in 1902.

Antioch: Metcalfe Co. See Knob Lick.

Anton: Hopkins Co. Runs along KY 85, 3 miles E of Madisonville. The po
was established 5 Mar 1900 and named for Anton Brucken who was a local
sawmill oeprator. PO closed in 1906.

Apex: Christian Co. Robert W Sharber established a PO here from 1902 to
1915. It was originally located about 2 miles E of the village on KY 189,
16 miles NNE of Hopkinsville. The name is said to have come from it being
located at the highest point in th county. The store and PO thought to
have been moved sometime before 1911.

Arcadia: Madison Co. See Terrill.

Argillite: Greenup Co. On the E bank of Little Sandy River at the
junction of KY 1 and 207; five miles S of Greenup. Named originally for
the first iron furnace built in this area. Means a rock consisting of clay
materials that was discovered in the bluff. Furnace was built in 1818 by
Richard Deering and brothers, Thomas and David Trimble. The po, which was
nearby took its name from this furnace and opened 14 June 1860. James
Lampton was the first postmaster - po was discontinued in 1861 and
retablished in 1874.

Argo: Pike Co. On KY 194 and Knox Creek, mouth of Camp Creek, 23 miles E
of Pikeville. PO was established 13 July 1906, Eli Hurley, Postmaster. He
supposedly named it for Argo Starch. It was originally located 1 1/2 miles
down Knox Creek at the mouth of Middle Elk Creek. PO moved to current
location in 1936.

Argylite PO: Greenup Co. See Argillite.

Arjay: Bell Co. A coal mining town along KY 66 and the Left Fork of
Straight Creek, 3 miles NE of Pikesville. Named for R J Asher, coal
operator in this area. PO was established 23 Feb 1911, George W Hairston
was the first postmaster.

Arlington: Carlisle Co. On US51 and KY 80, 5 miles S of Bardwell. A town
called Neville was originally located here, named for Robert Bucker
Neville's land. There was a squabble and the name of Holtsville was
suggested for Tom Holt who owned a local store. He thought it looked like
a knob 3 miles N of town to his home area in Arlington Heights, VA. The
Mixville PO was moved to this site in 1874 and renamed to Arlington. The
town was incorporated as such 5 Feb 1876.

Arminta Ward's Bottom: Martin Co. See Inez.

Arnold: Ohio Co. The po no longer exists 13 miles ESE of Hartford. It was
originally called Havens to honor Ancel Havens - early storekeeper and
grist-mill owner. PO was established 14 July 1884 and named for William
Arnold who owned the land. Mrs David (Vitula) Arnold was the first
postmistress.

Artemus: Knox Co. This lies opposite the mouth of Brush Creek, 2 1/2
miles SR of Barbourville. The station was named for Artemus Herndon who
donated the right of way for the railroad depot in 1888. James Durham
established the local post office of Elon 8 Sept 1888, renamed it to Brush
Creek in 1889 and then to Artemus in 1891.

Arthurmable: Magoffin Co. The po no longer exists here, it was located on
KY 7 and the Licking River, 12 miles SE of Salyersville. It had been
established 5 Jan 1925 by Burney Arnett at his home on KY 7, 1/2 mile
above the mouth of Molly Branch and named for his two oldest children. The
po was later moved 2 1/2 miles where it remained until closure in 1959.

Ashbrook: Anderson Co. This village no longer exists, it was located on
KY 53, 9 1/2 miles SW of Lawrenceburg. It was founded by Capt John H
McBrayer approximately 1878 - named for the ash trees in the area. The PO
was established 6 June 1890 by local storekeeper Thomas N Calvert and
closed in 1913.

Ashbyburg: Hopkins Co. This was originally a steamboat landing site but
few remains of the town. It was located on KY 370 on the Green River
aboutone mile below the mouth of Pond River and 13 miles NNE of
Madisonville. It was named for Stephen Ashby (1776-1841), who was a
Virginian who had settled in this area about 1808. It became the first
incorporated town in this county 3 Jan 1829 and the post office operated
from 1849 to 1969.

Ashcamp: Pike Co. Located at the junction of KY 195 and 197, it lies at
the mouth of the Ashcamp Brank of Elkhorn Creek, 14 1/2 miles SSE of
Pikeville. The town was established as Ash Camp 13 Sept 1870 and George
Barclay, who was the first postmaster, most likely named it for the ashes
found here by early settlers.

Asher: Leslie Co: This town is located at the junction of US 421 and KY
1780 and lies at the mouth of Beech Fork of the Middle Fork of the
Kentucky River, 7 1/2 miles S of Hyden. 22 May 1900 marked the opening of
the post office, Henry M Hensley was the first postmaster. It was
supposedly named for the Asher Family of southeastern KY who were
descendants of Dillion Asher (1777-1884) - he a Revolutionary War veteran
from England who settled on Red Bird River ca 1810.

Asher's Fork: Clay Co. The post office recently closed here, the
community lies at the head of the Left Fork of Asher's Fork of Goose Creek
and 13 miles SE of Manchester. The PO had been established 25 July 1940,
Mrs Daisy H Schaffer was the first postmistress. Named for the stream that
flows here.

Ashland: Boyd Co. Located on the Ohio River NW of Cattlettsburg, this is
the largest community in eastern KY. There was originally a large tract of
land here between the Big and Little Sandy Rivers which was settled about
1790 by George Poage, Jr (1754-1821) and his family. It was first known as
Poages Settlement. Levi Hampton suggested the name of Clay's Lexington
Estate to honor Henry Clay. A post office at Pollard's Mill was estabished
23 Fec 1847 and renamed to Ashland in 1854. Pollard's Mill had been named
for Henry b Pollard.

Ashland PO: Webster Co. See Clay.

Ashlock: Cumberland Co. Near the Monroe Co line, this town is less than
1/2 miles from the TN line and 11 1/2 miles SSW of Burkesville. It might
have been named for Isaac Ashlock who was an early settler here.
