Hi Group,
I am attaching a chart of the first three generations of Immigrant Archibald's
descendants.
A couple of comments:
The reason for the variable spelling of the name, outside of the fact that
colonial period English recorders didn't take much interest in spelling, is that
the name included at least one Gaelic sound that doesn't occur in English. The
name was pronounced "ray-ach" where the final consonant was a guttural aspirate
like the modern German -ch. The pronunciation and spelling were apparently
simplified to their present forms when Reverend Joseph Rhea showed up.
I believe strongly that James (c1744-1795) was the first child of William
(c1715-1802). I have two reasons for believing this. In the first place, James
needed time to grow up, get married, and raise a daughter who got married in
1792. Secondly, at that time, the Scotch-Irish apparently followed a naming
convention that gave the first son of the family the name of his maternal
grandfather. In this case that would have been James, after James Clark.
I insist that the lady who married John Lockridge was named Ann, not Anna or
Annie.
That's all I can think of right now.
Regards, Dick Fremon
