Thought this might interest some of you. Since it is about the Argyll
Campbell's.

FOR ALL CAMPBELL LIST SUBSCRIBERS:

(1) I recognize the names in the post 04/29/97 from Brian Camp-
bell (copied below) as taken from page 10 of a 69-page legal-
size "manuscript" written and typed in 1970 by Emily Price (nee
Campbell) and entitled "The Campbells from Auchindrain."

(2) About four miles from Inveraray, Auchindrain was a 12-family
communal tenancy on the estate of the Duke of Argyle. It also
happens to be about the only cluster of ancient houses and barns
in Scotland which has survived the clearances, modernization, and
other severe transformations.

(3) Auchindrain is now the "Auchindrain Museum of Country Life"
(telephone 01499-500235 or 01499-302314). Apparently the museum
does not yet have a web site. But, for a brief description, see
http://www.best.com/~hyle/ccsna/forums/clan/messages/28.html For
photos, see http://www.beloit.edu/~chem/Scotpic/Auchindrain.html

(4) Auchindrain illustrates how the Campbell family name was only
one among many, even on the estate of the Chief of the "Clan Camp-
bell." Three of the five siblings listed in Brian Campbell's post
-- John Campbell (b.11/28/1762), Archie Campbell (b.01/05/1771),
and Mary Campbell (b.about 1766) -- have descendents living in
and near Inveraray today.

(5) The other two siblings -- Peter Campbell (b.1775/1777 d.1848)
and Malcolm Campbell (b.03/15/1787 d.10/20/1862) -- sailed with
their wives and children to Quebec City and settled on two farms
near Russia Corners, Herkimer County, NY, arriving there by oxcart
on 07/12/1821. They have many, many descendants in the US and
Canada today.

(6) I am a great-grandson of Peter (b.01/12/1819 d.12/05/1915) son
of Malcolm (b.03/15/1787 d.10/20/1862). My mother (nee Campbell)
and I have visited Auchindrain, Cove Farm, Russia Corners, and
many other places associated with "The Campbells from Auchindrain."
And I possess information on hundreds -- but by no means all --
of their descendents on both sides of the Atlantic, including
approximately 500 living persons.

(7) I am very interested in learning more about Auchindrain and
any of its descendants -- and would of course be willing to share
the information already in my possession. Please contact me at
any of the addresses shown at the end of this message.

(8) I would be particularly interested in learning -- perhaps
from a Canadian subscriber to this list -- what has happened to
Emily Price (nee Campbell), her heirs, and her archives. Since
she is unrelated to "The Campbells of Auchindrain," her 1970
manuscript provides only tangential clues to her own age and
identity. Emily Campbell's Scottish ancestors lived on Kilmory
Ross Farm near Tayvallich in North Knapdale. She grew up in
Edmonton, AL, married Earle M. Price, and resided at 3831 Dunbar,
Vancouver 8, BC, at the time she worked on the manuscript.

(9) One of the Auchindrain descendants who provided a lot of infor-
mation to Price was Dr. Ian Balmer (b.08/25/1907). He resided at
1970 West 41st Avenue, Apt. 106, Vancouver, BC, in 1970. His only
child is Ann Catherine Balmer who married Michael Anthony McInnis
in 1963 and was reported as living in Oakville, ON, in 1970.

FOR BRIAN CAMPBELL:

(1) Brian, thank you very much for providing me with the opportun-
ity to write about my interest in the "The Campbells from Auchin-
drain." I have not been a subscriber to the Campbell List for
very long and do not have your first post (Peter Campbell Part I).
Could you please forward it to me? Thanks.

(2) Unfortunately, I know nothing of Peter (b.03/08/1807) son of
Peter (b.1775/1777 d.1848) beyond what is reported on page 12 of
Price's manuscript: "Nothing positive known about him; a letter
written in 1841 by his cousin-sister-in-law Mary Campbell, daughter
of Malcolm, seems to indicate that Peter was alive then and in the
States." The letter in question is reproduced on page 49 of the
manuscript, so you can weigh the evidence for yourself.

(3) I would be very interested in knowing your connection to --
and interest in -- Peter Campbell. Perhaps you could write to me
directly. Then, if you and I discover anything of interest to a
wider audience, we might summarize on the list.

ON 04/29/97 BRIAN CAMPBELL WROTE:

I have recently been provided with more information on the family of
the Peter Campbell I'm looking for so I thought I would pass it along
in case it helps ring any bells. The Peter I'm looking for was the
child of Peter Campbell b.1777 and Nancy MacArthur b.1776. Peter Jr.
we believe was born in 1807. The dates of birth are from some
extensive research done by various parties (I have about 80 legal size
pages of information) including birth records in Scotland, tombstones,
family letters etc.

Peter Campbell (Grandfather) & Isabel Ferguson's children, that we are
sure of but could also include a Dugald and a Neil, and thier children.

Christian-1806

The Peter I'm looking for has the ** beside his name. He was born at
Cove Farm, South Knapdale, Argyle. His parents Peter Campbell and
Nancy McCarter (McArthur) left Scotland in 1821 and emigrated to
Russia, NY, USA. The family later moved to Canada in 1830 but Peter
b.1807 returned to the States. Hope someone can come up with
something.

B. Campbell
