found this on NC/SC discussion list. A little tidbit to print and file in
your notebook.
I have a g.grandmother way back there whose name was Rebecca and she went by
BETSY, instead of BEcky.

Several of you have suggested I run through the name "Elizabeth." This is a
grand old name (and you thought Mary was) and has many variations. The
Hebrew is Elisheba, note thaat it contains the "El" meaning God, which is
common to many biblical names. The English spell it Elisabeth. The German
was Elisabetha. Of course, the "th" is not pronounced making it "Elisabeta."
And with differing forms here we go--Elspeth, Ellie, Eliza, Lisa, Libby,
Lizzie, Bess, Bessie, Beth, Betsy, Betty, Elsie, Elisa or Elise, Elisabetta,
(Russian) Jelisaweta, (Hungarian) Erzebet, Ella, Elsabe, Ilsabein,Elsbeth,
Elsie, Elseke.
I can't seem to find an Irish form, although I notice I forgot the Irish for
Joan, which is Siobhan, when I was running through Janes the other day. And
one of you reminded Jane is often spelled Jain. And the Gallic spelling of
Mary is Mhuri, pronounced Ma-Ray-a. Gallic and Irish are not always the
same.
There, that is enough running today. I have to go to a Senior Citizen dance
with my husband and I will be all worn out from running through all of these
names. Names--I love it. Can't help myself.
