Here is some interesting info on English and Scot-Irish naming patterns,
provided to me by a cousin on another family discussion list.
ENGLISH NAME PATTERNS 1700-1875
named for
lst son------------------------- father's father
2nd son----------------------- mother's father
3rd.son ----------------------- father
4th son------------------------ father's eldest brother
1st daughter----------------- mother's mother
2nd daughter---------------- father's mother
3rd daughter----------------- mother
4th daughter----------------- mother's eldest sister
Many of the predominately Scot-Irish frontiersmen followed this pattern:
Oldest son----------------------Mother's father
second son-------------------- Father's father
Oldest daughter-------------- Father's mother
second daughter------------ Mother's mother
I would like to hear how your family named their children. I think it would
be interesting to see the variations. Since I know that many Rhea's did not
follow this pattern.
