According to Denis Beauregard's "Endroits au Quebec - Places" Roberval is
not a county, but a town in Lac-St-Jean County. So, for that matter, is
La-Doré, also known as Notre-Dame-de-La-Doré. According to "Topos sur le
Web", Roberval is a "municipalité", and La-Doré a "municipalité de paroisse"
in the MRC of Le-Domaine-du-Roi, and the Région Administrative of Saguenay -
Lac-St-Jean.
Since I was a child, some six decades ago, my grandparents referred to the
"terroir" of their ancestry in terms of town and county. Pépère was born in
"Saint-Isidore-de-La-Prairie, Québec", raised in "Gentilly, Polk County,
Minnesota". Mémère was born in the States, but her folks were from
"Saint-Pie-de-Bagot".
The practice of most folks I know who search for their ancestors up to the
tenth generation and beyond in Québec, is to list places of birth, marriage
and burial in that manner: village (if applicable), township, county,
province. But since the reorganization of municipal and regional government
in Québec, it is becoming quite difficult, especially for new searchers, to
determine which "traditional county" their ancestors came from. Even those
of us who know are sometimes taken aback. For example, one of my cousins was
surprised to learn that the townships of Sainte-Marie and Saint-Joseph, which
used to be in Beauce, are now in Nouvelle-Beauce and Robert-Cliche,
respectively.
Je ne sais plus mot dire, mais j'en ai envie!
