Hello Helen
Especially at a time when many children died in infancy, whenever a child was
considered at risk, any lay person (parent or midwife generally) would
baptize the newborn. As these children survived, they were then baptized in
a ceremony at church, given their names, and entered in the register of
baptisms. The wording of the baptism is then "If you are not baptized, I
baptize you etc.", making it a ""conditional"" baptism.
Hope this helps
Nicole
