Subject: [QUEBEC] Researching Gilson surname in Buckingham
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 22:10:13 -0400
Hello,
Continuing to search for the parents of Hiram Gilson, b. 1808 NH, m.
Elizabeth Hews/Hewes/Hughes, b. 1813 possibly Quebec, they married in
Hull, Quebec 1831. It is possible Hiram is the son of Eleazer Gilson
who was a lumberman in Buckingham around 1825. Had dealings with the
Indians in 1818 and a court case in 1834 with reference to the leasing
of Kettle Island.
Can SKS please tell me how to find a record of Hiram and Elizabeth's
marriage which took place in Hull in 1831? It is believed they were
protestant. Would the marriage record list the parents names? Believe
Elizabeth's family also lived in Buckingham. Hiram and Elizabeth
migrated into Ontario about 1835, living in Oxford, Maitland and
settling in Collingwood approx 1855. Hiram was a pioneer of
Collingwood, helping to plot the city, building a sawmill and other
businesses, a member of the Masonic Lodge, and the Trinity United
Church. They had 13 children. Other surnames in this family: Todd,
Seeley, McCabe, Small, Briggs, Quigley, Turvey.
Also, how would I find out when Eleazer died? I believe his wife was
Abigail Senter, both were born in Massachusetts.
Thank you very much for any help.
Mary in Michigan
