Subject: [QUEBEC] 78th Regiment

I am looking for info on a John Simpson, that fought in the French and
Indian Wars. He fought for the 78th Regiment (Frasers Highlanders).
He was a private and later received land in Albany County (Part of
Albany County is now Rensselaer County, NY). My ancestor John R.
Simpson lived most of his life in Rensselaer County, NY after moving
there from St Johns (Lower Canada). Does anyone know about this
Regiment?
I was sent the following:
I have a list of soldiers paid "Subsistance and Sword Money" -
unfortunately undated, but believed to be between Aug-Dec 1763 - and a
John Simpson does appear on that list in Colonel Fraser's own company.
He was paid 7sh for subsistance, and 3sh for sword money. Now, I also
happen to have a list of the soldiers in the Colonel's company (as
opposed to the Regiment), dated Aug 23, 1763, but no John Simpson
appears on the list as being paid for 21 days (it does not say how
much). However, there is a Walter Simpson. So either these are two
different people, or maybe he was John Walter Simpson? These were the
only two Simpson soldiers I could find (my lists are in no way
complete, so this does not mean that there were not more). However,
there was another entry in the Colonel's company for an Ann Simpson,
who was the laundress (also being paid for 21 days). This may be
interesting as the laundresses were usually the wives of NCO's in the
same company.
That's all I have, but I hope it helps. I wish I could supply you with
more information, but unfortunately, I don't know too much more. The
reason I started reading about the Highland Regiments and Battles, was
to try and find more on the "average" soldier - but could not find too
much. All the records & muster roles must be on some dusty old shelf
in England!
