Pat,

I am a linguist by profession and work a lot with machine
translation. I am not surprised that you are having problems getting
good translations out of the computer -- generally speaking, they
are about at the level of someone with maybe two years or less of
language studies. So don't expect much.

That said, for French-to-English, I think that translation software
produced by the Systran company is probably among the best. (If
anyone out there knows something better, I'd like to know about it.)
That can be found and used for free in Alta Vista. I don't know whether
what you get on Alta Vista is as good as the Systran translation software you
might purchase at a computer store. Maybe they're both the same.
