Hi Debbie;

If you go to the PRDH site, you'll find about 35
different spelling variations for deCelles.
Why so many variations? Possibly because the
people themselves couldn't write and the priests,
or whoever did the writing, wrote by ear.
As for the dit names, there were several reasons
and there is a web site somewhere (I'd have to look)
that explains most of the reasons. Sansquartier
may have been given, if the ancestor was in the
army, as a nickname. Some dit names were
"inherited" that way.
