Hi Paul
My grand aunt was born in Canada and remained single all of her life. In
1930, when she initially applied (Declaration of intent), she had resided in
the US for eighteen years and had been employed been employed steadily (as a
private nurse) by the same person for that length of time -- so she would
not have been a financial burden on the system.
Also, even though she was 4th generation Metis, I don't think she was aware
of that fact. Also, she always declared herself as "white".
I am not sure that the 1954 revisions would have affected her but it's
something to think about.
I just don't know why there is the 24 year gap between her application in
1930 and her being granted Naturalization in 1954 and it has intrigued me.
I'm hoping the paperwork will solve that mystery.

1954 may have been the year major revisions to the Naturalization laws.
The quota system now included Asians & other non-Europeans.
I believe it happen about then.
