Bonjour Shirley-Jean,
I was not aware that BMS2000 had ever made some of their data available for free downloading (and I can't see why they would ever have done that!). But since this seems to have been the case, please accept my apologies for using the expression «pirate».
I understand your desire to help people («I like to help people who just can't afford
some of the 'cash cows' that are available on the net now») but you must understand that far from every pay site is a «cash cow» and that far from everyone who asks for a (free) lookup can't afford a subscription to the corresponding site. Like I wrote, several pay-sites struggle to survive and continue their work. By «helping» some people you are sometime hurting others...
I know for a fact that the PRDH data in CD form has been pirated and circulated (given or sold) in some genealogical circles and that has hurt us in our activities. This is why I tend to react (too?) quickly in some situations! Again, please accept my apologies...

I did NOT pirate it. I would NEVER do such a thing!!! It takes a lot of
"gall" to accuse me of that.
There was NO copyright when I got it. It was downloadable for anyone at
that time.
The copyright and subscribing came MUCH later.
Even if my copy is no where near the size BMS 2000 with its 'pay per
search' has on the internet now, I like to help people who just can't afford
some of the 'cash cows' that are available on the net now.
FYI
Shirley-Jean

You have a lot of gall! Not only you admit publicly that you «pirated» their
data base, but you invite people to benefit from your crime instead of
subscribing for the information. Ever heard of something called
«Copyright»...Or Intellectual property?
I am responsible of a pay for use data base and the relatively small amount
of money we make is badly needed to maintain and expand the data base.
People like you just don't realise the harm you are doing to people like
us...

When they first put their basic pilot site up a few years ago on a trial
basis, I was able to download it.
It has since been expanded to contain many more names than the original copy
I have but it usually has most everyone I search for.
So, please don't hesitate to ask me to do a look up. All it costs me is my
time.
