Well, Annette,
I can only assume you know the name of the person you are looking for.
Records of burials are pretty standard in the Catholic parish registers.
The act will usually contain words in it like "inhumé", "cimetière", "le
corps de", and usually you'll see an "S" in the margin next to the act
which indicates this is a burial (sépulture).
If the person was married, you'll usually see "époux de" if the deceased
is a man, or "espouse de" if a woman. A widow will be "veuve" or
"veufve", and a widower "veuf", usually followed by the name of the
spouse. But sometimes there is no indication of a spouse.
In many burial records, you'll also find an indication of the age of the
deceased, which should help you narrow down your search.
Children will usually have the name of their parents showing, as well as
their age at death.
There are exceptions, and you might not always find all or any of these
details.
But if you don't know anything else about the person other than a name,
you'll just have beef up your knowledge of the language spoken by your
ancestors. And, by the way, guessing is not a bad way to start.
Of course, there is always asking for help...
Cheers,
Mona
