You are not far off though I was just told that they came across in the middle of the night and when they (the officials) could not understand they said they were other O'Neils on the boat so they were O'Neil  ??
they settled in Oswego, NY area and I am learning more as we type

I know this is a real stretch, but when I read Don's posting it occured to me that the "dit" name Leguille sounded much like AIGUILLE  = Needle. 

Wonder if it's possible that someone thought of that translation and it become ONeil!
