Hello Joan,

The "F" stands for the latin word "Folio", meaning sheet. So te book
you are looking at is numbered according to its sheets, not its pages.

Each sheet has a front, called a "recto" because it is the right side,
and a back, called a "verso" because it is the reverse side.

So, to go back to your example, folio 78 where it is numbered, is in
fact fol. 78 r, and its flip side is fol. 78 v.

By the way, the was McLaughlin family from Cty Tyrone living in LAchine,
Qc, some members of which moved to Ontario in the late 1800's, early 1900's.
