I got pension info for a veteran from WW1 from Veterans Affairs back in
2005. I don't know if the rules have changed since then but this is what I
was told when I called them asking about how to get the info. You can get
info on anyone(doesn't have to be a relative) who's been dead at least 20
years. You can send an informal request (which doesn't cost anything) or a
formal request ($5) to their Access to Information section. I only sent an
informal request as I was only interested in any family info & where he was
living from the time of his discharge until his death. It took about 6 weeks
but I did get the info.
