Hello Phyllis,

Well, in this instance, TANGUAY is both right and wrong. The HAYNES
brothers, Jonathan and Joseph were indeed born in Haverhill, and were
both the sons of Jonathan HAYNES, sr., and Sarah MOULTON. However, the
1712 mariage record does read otherwise.

That is because they both became known as Joseph after becoming captives.

- Jonathan junior was born on September 3rd, 1684, in Newbury, MA. He is
the one who, named as Joseph, married Marie POSÉ / PAUZÉ (not POUZE),
daughter of Jacques and Marie JOBIDON, in 1712. The name of his parents
was transmogrified by translation as was often the case, and so was the
name of their town of residence shown as "Heuret near Boston" in the
mariage record of 1712.

- Joseph, his brother, was born on August 4th, 1689, in Newbury, MA, and
married four times. (see lineage below)

The HAYNES / HAINS / HINS / HINSE / etc... lineage, as far as I have
been able to document it, goes something like this:

Joseph or Joseph Jonathan Haynes b. 1684 was originally from Newbury and Haverhill Massachusetts and was taken from Haverhill, Massachusetts to Canada by Indians at the age of 12 and was sold to the French (Taken from the book "New England Captives Carried to Canada" Vol 1 by Emma Lewis Coleman). This book states his parents were Jonathan Haynes and Sarah Moulton.

Is ther anything in this marriage record to indicate the persons mentioned as his parents are not his biological parents? The reason I ask is that the book I mentioned above says Jonathan Haynes and Sarah Moulton had 2 sons Jonathan b. 1684 and Joseph b.1689, and later goes on to say that M Tanguay names 2 Josephs, the first Joseph b.1685 (Joseph Jonathan?) is the son of Jean and Angelique Holkne and a son Clement b. 1734. I guess I'm confused as to who Joseph Jonathan Hines's parents are, Jean and Angeligue Holkne or Jonathan and Sarah Moulton.
