Good morning, Sue
Let me answer the second question first. In Quebec, the Parish
Registers of Birth/Baptism, Marriage and Death/Burial are official
civil records as well as ecclesiastical records; in the United States,
birth, marriage and burial records are kept separately in town clerks
officies. First Holy Communion and Confirmation records, on the other
hand, have no civil effect, and no copy is kept at the courthouse
either in Quebec or in the United States. All of the First Communion
records I have seen are simple lists of the recipients, with no
parents' names, and the Confirmation records lists of the recipients
with the names of the sponsors and no parents' names.
As to the first question, there is no requirement that the full
baptismal name of the bride and groom be recited in the exchange of
vows, iin the Catholic Church, although it is quite commonly done.
It's done in other churches, and in registry offices too. "I, Camilla
Rosemary, take thee, Charles . . . " I mention that name because she's
my cousin -- 9th cousin. She's also a 3rd cousin of Saint Marguerite
d'Youvile!

Subject: [Q-R] Fr. Taggart/ Catholic Church records
Fr. Taggart
I recently read an article about Catholic Church
records. It said that Catholics were married under
their BAPTISMAL names ! Is this true ?
Secondly, I have never seen any suggestion to research
Catholic Church records for Confirmations.
Those records might give parental identification and
tell where the family lived at the time of
confirmation. Is there such a thing as Confirmation
records ?
Thanks so much for your help.
