Subject: [Q-R] Coming into US from Canada

I was wondering if someone can give me some help about coming into the US
from Canada.
I am trying to find my 'LANCTOT" (other versions - LANCTO or LONCTO)
ancestors who came to the US from Canada in the late 1800's. I have found info on
my family that they came to US.. due to the
information that I have research over the years that they came here and died
here. Also some
remarried and etc etc.
Such as my gggrandfather, HUBERT LANCTOT/LANCTO/LONCTO, came to US to NY
with my gggrandmother, ESTHER (HOULE) died in the US and then Hubert continued
on and remarried two more times. My gggrandfather FRANCOIS was born in
Canada, married his first wife in NY and had three children..(she was not my
gggrandmother...) she died and he married my gggrandmother in 1870 (DELIA
CARDINAL) and came to MA and had some additional children.... I have other relatives
as well in the US>
My problem is I cannot find any documents saying that they arrived in the US
from Canada. I cant seem to find any passenger lists or immigration info.
Did they just walk over without any documentation? Is that
possible? I am wondering becauase I am hoping these immigration documents
could give more info..
I looked into all the passengers lists that was on Ancestry.com and Ellis
Island briefly.
What else is there to research into.. and you can forget, Family Research
Research comes up on that either.....
Can someone give me some one help with some advice on what to do next or
where to look?
