I am trying to translate a paragraph from MEMOIRES on the Amiot family. This
paragraph is on pg. 18 of the latest issue. I have gone from word to word in
my French-English dictionary and tried to put it through several on-line
translation sites, but to no avail. Some of the words will not translate.
Please - I need help!

Il estoit adroit à destourner les mauvais discours, & à rependre avec grace
ceux qui juroient, ou qui se donnoient des imprecations, & par ce moyen
empeschoit bien du mal, & n'offensoit personne; car son innocence, avec
l'opinion qu'on avoit de son courage, le mettait à couvert.
