Yes, I think we do ourselves a disservice when we try to view history
through today's standards. For better or worse, things were much different.
In 1668 my Vaillancourt ancestor, Robert, married Marie Gobeil when she was
thirteen years old. In the 1880's my grandfather's cousin, at age 10,
worked at a lumber camp, standing on a box to reach the sink to wash dishes.
Even in my own life, my father thought it was folly that I didn't quit
school at 16, get a job and save some money. He was very proud however when
I was graduated from the university and became a teacher.
And as my final thought on this, some years ago I read portions of Pierre
Goubert's "The French Peasantry in the Seventeenth Century". In it, he
portrays the elderly of the time as being viewed as a burden to the young,
working poor. They didn't send them out on ice floes or anything, but they
were perhaps resented for their inability to contribute to their own upkeep.
But, he states, "Yet, there also seems sometimes to have been a degree of
admiration and respect for the exceptionally long-lived. Octogenarians were
readily reputed to be 100 years old, a fact which the priest would duly
inscribe in the parish record. Unfortunately, each time it has been
possible to check one of these assertions, it has proved to be an
exaggeration." This answered the question of why my 4th ggfather,
Barthelemy Vaillancourt dit Benoit, born 1740, was listed on his burial
record in 1828 as being "cent ans" or 100 years old. Funny how those
traditions carried on for centuries.
Just my 2 cents,
Barbara

Couldn't understand my wanting to go to college. His father did the same
for his 16th. ...
